Many studies have been conducted to look at the use of Metformin in women who have been diagnosed with PMOS. Most of those studies have shown that Metformin can actually make periods more regular and can improve the fertility in women suffering from PMOS. Metformin works best in overweight women with PMOS. However, it is less effective in women who are markedly obese. Recent studies have shown that taking Metformin up to 12 weeks of a pregnancy can reduce the risk of miscarriages.
Metformin can cause nausea, abdominal bloating and wind. In severe cases, it can cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Most women tolerate it very well, particularly if the dose is increased gradually. To minimise any side effects the tablets should be taken in the middle of a meal or straight after a meal. Side effects usually settle after 1-2 weeks.
