Weight Loss
What is obesity and how is it treated?
Obesity is a long-term condition where excess body fat starts to affect your health, based on your body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference. It raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. In England, 66% of adults are overweight or living with obesity (Health Survey for England 2024).
Treatment options
- Lifestyle changes: a balanced, lower-calorie diet, more activity and behavioural support.
- Pharmacy medicine: orlistat (sold as Alli).
- Prescription-only medicines: a prescriber assesses whether these are suitable when lifestyle changes are not enough.
- NHS services: specialist weight management and, for severe obesity, bariatric surgery.
