Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed for both. It is prescribed for weight management in adults with obesity, or who are overweight with a weight-related condition, alongside diet and activity, and to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. A prescriber decides which use applies to you during the consultation.

How is Mounjaro different from Wegovy or semaglutide?

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, so it acts on two gut-hormone pathways. Semaglutide, the ingredient in Wegovy, acts on the GLP-1 pathway alone. Both slow digestion and reduce appetite, but tirzepatide's dual action is what distinguishes it. Your prescriber advises which is suitable.

How many doses are in a Mounjaro KwikPen?

One Mounjaro KwikPen is a multiple-dose pre-filled pen that contains four once-weekly doses, which is a one-month supply at a single strength. This differs from single-dose pens that hold one dose each. You dial and inject one dose per week, rotating the injection site.

How do you take Mounjaro KwikPen?

Mounjaro is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection, given on the same day each week into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. Treatment starts at 2.5 mg and increases in 2.5 mg steps no sooner than every four weeks until you reach your maintenance dose, up to a maximum of 15 mg.

What are the common side effects of Mounjaro?

The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain. These are usually mild to moderate and tend to ease as your body adjusts and as the dose is increased slowly. Always read the Patient Information Leaflet and report severe or persistent symptoms to your prescriber.

Does Mounjaro affect the contraceptive pill?

It can. Tirzepatide may reduce how well oral contraceptives are absorbed, especially when you start treatment and after each dose increase. If you use the pill, switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method such as condoms for four weeks after starting and for four weeks after each dose increase. Discuss this with your prescriber.

How should Mounjaro KwikPen be stored?

Mounjaro does not need refrigerating the moment it arrives. It can be kept below 30 degrees Celsius for up to 21 days, which covers everyday use and short trips. For longer-term storage, keep it in a refrigerator at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius, do not freeze it, and keep it in the original carton to protect it from light.

Can I get Mounjaro on the NHS?

Yes, for some people. NICE recommends tirzepatide for weight management, and the NHS is rolling it out in phases through primary care from June 2025, starting with the highest BMI and most weight-related conditions. Many adults who do not yet meet the NHS phase criteria choose a private online consultation instead.
