Wegovy Injection Sites: Where to Inject

Wegovy Injection Sites: Where to Inject

In one sentence: You can inject Wegovy just under the skin of your stomach, the front of your thighs or the outside of your upper arms, and all three sites work equally well, so choose whichever is comfortable and move the exact spot slightly each week.

At a glance

  • Three sites: the stomach (abdomen), the front of the thighs, and the outside of the upper arms.

  • All equally effective: you can pick whichever is easiest and change site whenever you like.

  • Rotate the spot: move a few centimetres within your chosen area each week to keep the skin healthy and avoid lumps.

  • Keep clear of your belly button by a few centimetres when using the stomach.

  • Avoid skin that is bruised, sore, red, hard, scarred or has stretch marks.

  • Under the skin only: never inject Wegovy into a vein or muscle.

Choosing where to inject Wegovy is simple once you know the options and a few rules of thumb. This guide covers the three approved sites, how to rotate them, where not to inject, and what to do if a spot becomes sore or lumpy. It sits alongside our step-by-step guide to how to use the Wegovy pen, which covers the full injection technique.

"People often overthink where to inject. The honest answer is that all three sites work the same, so the best site is the one you can reach comfortably and inject confidently. The habit that really matters is moving the exact spot each week, rather than using the same patch of skin over and over."

Key takeaways

Where do you inject Wegovy?

Into the fatty layer just under the skin of your stomach, the front of your thighs, or the outside of your upper arms.

Does it matter which site you use?

No. All three sites are equally effective, so you can choose the most comfortable one and switch whenever you want.

How do you rotate injection sites?

Move the exact spot a few centimetres each week within your chosen area, so you are not injecting into the same point repeatedly.

Where should you avoid injecting?

Skin that is bruised, tender, red, hard or scarred, and never into a vein or muscle.

Where can you inject Wegovy?

Wegovy is a subcutaneous injection, which means it goes into the fatty layer just under the skin, not into muscle or a vein. According to the Wegovy Summary of Product Characteristics, it "is to be injected subcutaneously in the abdomen, in the thigh or in the upper arm".1

Site

Where exactly

Good to know

Stomach (abdomen)

Anywhere across the tummy, staying a few centimetres away from the belly button

Easy to see and reach; the most popular choice for self-injection

Front of the thighs

The upper, outer part of the front of the thigh

Easy to reach when sitting down; good if you prefer not to use your stomach

Outside of the upper arms

The fleshy area on the outer back of the upper arm

Harder to reach yourself, so often easier with help from someone else

Does it matter which site you use?

No. For Wegovy, the three sites are interchangeable and equally effective, so you can choose based on comfort and convenience. The Wegovy Summary of Product Characteristics confirms that "the injection site can be changed" without any need to adjust the dose.1 This is different from some insulins, where the site can change how quickly the medicine is absorbed. With Wegovy, you have a free choice week to week.

How do you rotate Wegovy injection sites?

Rotating means moving the exact spot you inject, so you are not using the same point of skin repeatedly. Novo Nordisk's patient instructions for Wegovy advise choosing a site and rotating locations to help prevent lumps.2 A simple approach:

  • Stay within one area (for example, the stomach) but move the spot about 2 to 3 centimetres from last week's.

  • Picture the area as a grid and work your way around it week by week.

  • You can also alternate between areas, such as stomach one week and thigh the next, if you prefer.

  • Keep a simple note of where you last injected if it helps you remember.

Rotating helps avoid a build-up of firm, fatty lumps under the skin (known as lipohypertrophy) that can form if the same spot is used too often, and which can affect how the medicine is absorbed.

Where should you not inject Wegovy?

Avoid injecting into skin that is not healthy or into the wrong layer of tissue. Do not inject:

  • Into skin that is bruised, tender, red, swollen, hard, scarred or has stretch marks.

  • Into the exact same spot you used last time.

  • Too close to your belly button; keep a few centimetres clear.

  • Into a vein or a muscle. Wegovy is designed to go just under the skin only.

Important: If an area of skin becomes persistently lumpy, hard or painful, stop using that spot and speak to your pharmacist or prescriber before your next dose.

Can you inject Wegovy in your arm yourself?

The upper arm is an approved site, but it is the hardest to reach on your own, because you need to inject into the fleshy area on the outer back of the arm. Many people find the stomach or the front of the thigh easier and more reliable for self-injection. If you prefer the arm, it is often easiest to ask someone to help you inject it.

What if injecting leaves a lump or feels sore?

Mild redness, a small bruise or a little soreness at the injection site is common and usually settles on its own. Rotating your sites is the best way to reduce this. If you notice a lasting lump, hardening of the skin, or a reaction that spreads or does not settle, raise it with your pharmacist or prescriber. You can read more about what is normal and what is not in Wegovy side effects.

"A small lump or bit of redness that fades within a day or two is nothing to worry about. What you want to avoid is a hard, raised patch from injecting the same spot repeatedly. If a site stays lumpy, give it a rest and move to a fresh area, and mention it to us so we can check your technique."

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to inject Wegovy?

There is no single best site. The stomach, the front of the thighs and the outside of the upper arms all work equally well. Most people find the stomach or thigh easiest to reach for self-injection. Choose the site you can inject most comfortably and confidently.

Can you inject Wegovy in the same place every week?

You can use the same body area, such as the stomach, each week, but you should move the exact spot a few centimetres each time. Injecting into the very same point repeatedly can cause firm lumps under the skin that may affect how the medicine is absorbed.

Does the injection site change how well Wegovy works?

No. For Wegovy, the stomach, thigh and upper arm are interchangeable and equally effective, and the product information confirms the site can be changed without adjusting the dose. This is unlike some insulins, where the site can affect absorption.

How far from your belly button should you inject Wegovy?

When using your stomach, stay a few centimetres away from the belly button and inject into the surrounding area. Avoid any skin that is bruised, tender, hard or scarred, and move the spot each week.

Why do you need to rotate injection sites?

Rotating stops you from injecting into the same point of skin over and over, which can lead to firm, fatty lumps called lipohypertrophy. These lumps can be uncomfortable and can affect how the medicine is absorbed, so moving the spot each week keeps the skin healthy.

Can you inject Wegovy into muscle by mistake?

Wegovy should go into the fatty layer just under the skin, not into muscle or a vein. Using the approved sites and the correct technique makes this unlikely. If you are unsure about needle length or technique, ask your pharmacist to talk you through it.
