Wegovy Pill Dosage and Titration Schedule
In one sentence
The Wegovy pill starts at 1.5mg once a day and steps up gradually, through 4mg and 9mg, to a 25mg maintenance dose, with at least one month at each level.
At a glance
The Wegovy pill comes in four strengths: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg and 25mg.
You start low at 1.5mg and increase in steps, with at least one month at each dose.
25mg once a day is the maintenance dose and the maximum recommended dose.
Building up slowly (titration) helps your body adjust and reduces side effects.
You take one tablet a day; never take two to reach a higher dose.
Your prescriber can keep you on a lower dose if a higher one does not suit you.
Unlike a painkiller you might take at full strength from day one, the Wegovy pill is built up slowly. This step-by-step approach, known as titration, is a normal part of how modern weight-loss medicines are prescribed. Here is the full schedule and what to expect at each stage.
Key takeaways
What is the starting dose? 1.5mg once a day, taken for the first month.
What is the maintenance dose? 25mg once a day, which is also the maximum recommended dose.
How long does it take to reach the top dose? Usually around four months, spending at least a month at each step.
Why increase slowly? To let your body adjust and reduce side effects such as nausea.
What is the Wegovy pill dosage schedule?
The Wegovy pill starts at 1.5mg once a day, then increases through 4mg and 9mg to a 25mg maintenance dose, with a minimum of one month at each dose level.1 The table below shows the standard schedule.
Stage | Daily dose | Typical timing |
Starting dose | 1.5mg | Month 1 |
First increase | 4mg | Month 2 |
Second increase | 9mg | Month 3 |
Maintenance dose (maximum) | 25mg | Month 4 onwards |
This is the standard plan, but your prescriber may adjust the timing to suit how you respond.
Why does the Wegovy pill dose increase gradually?
The dose increases slowly to give your body time to get used to the medicine and to reduce side effects. Because the Wegovy pill slows digestion, going straight to a high dose would be much more likely to cause nausea and other stomach symptoms. Titration keeps treatment more comfortable and easier to stick with. Learn more about Wegovy pill side effects and how to manage them.
"The slow build-up is not a delay. It is part of good treatment. Reaching the top dose too quickly usually means more nausea, and that is often why people give up. I would always rather a patient take an extra few weeks at a lower dose and stay the course comfortably."
What is the maintenance dose of the Wegovy pill?
The maintenance dose is 25mg once a day, which is also the maximum recommended daily dose of oral semaglutide.1 Once you reach it, you stay on this dose long term, alongside changes to your diet and activity.
What happens if a higher dose does not suit you?
If a dose increase brings on side effects you find hard to manage, you do not simply have to push through. The dose can be kept at the previous level if needed, rather than moving up.1 Always speak to your prescriber before changing your dose, so any adjustment is made safely.
How do you take each dose?
Whatever your current strength, you take one tablet a day, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, with a small sip of water, and wait at least 30 minutes before eating. Never take two tablets in one day to reach a higher dose. Our full guide covers how to take the Wegovy pill correctly, and there is separate advice on what to do if you miss a dose.
Does the dose change for older people or kidney or liver problems?
For most people, no dose change is needed based on age, and no change is needed for mild or moderate kidney or liver impairment, although it is used with care in liver impairment. It is not recommended for people with severe kidney or severe liver impairment.1
Group | Dose adjustment |
| Older adults | No change needed |
| Mild or moderate kidney impairment | No change needed |
| Severe kidney impairment (eGFR under 30) | Not recommended |
| Mild or moderate liver impairment | No change; used with care |
| Severe liver impairment | Not recommended |

Can you take the Wegovy pill with diabetes medicines?
The Wegovy pill should not be taken with another GLP-1 receptor agonist. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea for diabetes, your prescriber may reduce those doses when you start, to lower the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia).1 Always share your full medicines list at your consultation. See our guide to Wegovy pill interactions.
How long do you stay on the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill is intended for long-term use while it continues to help you. Your prescriber reviews your progress regularly. As a benchmark, NICE suggests reviewing weight-loss medicine and considering stopping if less than 5% of your starting weight has been lost after six months.2 Read what results to realistically expect for a fuller picture.

Frequently asked questions about Wegovy pill dosage
How long does it take to get to the full Wegovy pill dose?
It usually takes around four months to reach the 25mg maintenance dose, because you spend at least one month at each of the 1.5mg, 4mg and 9mg steps first. Your prescriber may adjust this timing to suit you.
Can you start on a higher dose of the Wegovy pill?
No. Everyone starts at 1.5mg once a day. Starting higher would greatly increase the risk of side effects such as nausea, which is why the dose is built up gradually over several months.
What is the highest dose of the Wegovy pill?
The maximum recommended dose is 25mg once a day, which is also the maintenance dose. You should never take more than one tablet a day to try to reach a higher dose.
Can you stay on a lower dose of the Wegovy pill?
Yes, if needed. If a higher dose causes side effects you find hard to manage, your prescriber can keep you at the previous dose level rather than moving up. Always agree to any change with your prescriber.
Can you take two Wegovy pills a day?
No. You take only one tablet a day. Taking more than one tablet to try to achieve the effect of a higher dose is not recommended and can increase the risk of side effects.
Do you take the Wegovy pill every day?
Yes. Unlike the weekly injection, the Wegovy pill is taken once every day, at the same time each morning on an empty stomach. Taking it consistently helps it work and helps you keep the routine.
