How Does Wegovy Work?

How Does Wegovy Work?

In one sentence: Wegovy (semaglutide) works by copying a natural gut hormone called GLP-1, which reduces your appetite and slows how quickly your stomach empties, so you feel fuller for longer, eat less and lose weight alongside a healthier diet and more activity.

At a glance

  • What it is: Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide, a once-weekly injection used for long-term weight management.

  • How it works: it is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, meaning it mimics the GLP-1 hormone your gut releases after eating.

  • The effect: it lowers appetite, reduces food cravings and slows stomach emptying, so you feel satisfied on smaller portions.

  • It is a tool, not a shortcut: it is licensed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity.

  • It builds gradually: appetite often changes in the first few weeks, and the dose is increased in steps over roughly four to five months.

  • It is a long-term treatment: appetite and weight benefits fade after you stop, which is why maintenance matters.

  • Access: Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation and clinician assessment.

Wegovy is one of the most talked-about weight-management treatments in the UK, and understanding how it actually works helps you use it safely and set realistic expectations. According to the House of Commons Library, obesity affects around 29% of adults in England, with roughly two-thirds of adults living with overweight or obesity,1 so medicines that support weight loss are now a mainstream part of care. This guide explains the science in plain English: what semaglutide does in your body, how quickly it works, and why diet and activity still matter.

"The simplest way to think about Wegovy is that it turns down the volume on appetite. It works with your body's own fullness signals rather than against them, but it is a support for lifestyle change, not a replacement for it. The people who do best pair the medicine with realistic changes to how they eat and move."

Key takeaways

How does Wegovy work?

It mimics GLP-1, a hormone that signals fullness to your brain, so you feel less hungry and eat less. It also slows how fast your stomach empties.

Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?

Both contain semaglutide, but Wegovy is licensed in the UK for weight management, while Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes.

Does Wegovy work on its own?

No. It is designed and licensed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

How quickly does it work?

Appetite often changes within the first few weeks, and the full effect builds as the dose is increased in steps over about 16 to 20 weeks.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide, a prescription medicine given as a once-weekly injection under the skin for long-term weight management. It is supplied as the Wegovy FlexTouch (semaglutide injection) pre-filled pen. The same active ingredient, semaglutide, is also available as a tablet, known as the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide), which works in the same way through a different route.

Semaglutide belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists.2 That name describes exactly what it does, which is the key to understanding how it works.

How does Wegovy work in the body?

Wegovy works by mimicking a natural hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which your gut releases after you eat. According to Diabetes UK, semaglutide "mimics the action of a gut hormone called GLP-1" and "slows down how quickly food is digested", helping you "stay full for longer".2

By acting like GLP-1, semaglutide sends a stronger and longer-lasting "I am full" message to the appetite centres in your brain. The result is that hunger and food cravings fall, portions feel more satisfying, and your overall calorie intake tends to drop without the constant sense of restriction that makes dieting hard to sustain.

The three main effects of semaglutide

  • Reduced appetite: it acts on the appetite-regulating centres in the brain, lowering hunger and the drive to eat.

  • Fewer cravings: many people report a quieter "food noise" and less interest in high-calorie foods.

  • Slower stomach emptying: food stays in the stomach longer, so you feel fuller for longer after a meal.

Research by Blundell and colleagues, published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, shows semaglutide reduces energy intake by increasing feelings of fullness and reducing hunger, rather than by speeding up your metabolism.3 In other words, it changes how much you want to eat, not how fast you burn energy.

Does Wegovy affect blood sugar?

Wegovy has a modest effect on blood sugar because GLP-1 helps the body release insulin when blood glucose is high. On its own, it rarely causes low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia). However, Diabetes UK notes that "hypos are more common when you take this drug with other diabetes medications such as insulin or a sulphonylurea", and a prescriber may reduce those medicines when you start Wegovy.2

How is Wegovy taken?

According to the Wegovy Summary of Product Characteristics, it is injected once a week, on the same day each week, into the stomach area, thigh or upper arm, with or without food.4 The dose is not fixed from the start. It is increased in steps to let your body adjust and to reduce side effects such as nausea.

Treatment usually begins at 0.25 mg once weekly and steps up roughly every four weeks towards the 2.4 mg maintenance dose. For the full schedule, see our guides to the Wegovy dosage and dose schedule and how to use the Wegovy pen.

How long does Wegovy take to work?

Many people notice reduced appetite within the first one to two weeks, but weight change is gradual because the dose is built up slowly. The stronger appetite effect tends to arrive as you reach the higher doses over about four to five months. For a week-by-week picture, read how long Wegovy takes to work.

"A common worry in the first fortnight is that nothing is happening on the scales. That is normal. The early weeks are about the medicine settling in and your appetite starting to shift, not rapid weight loss. Judge progress over months, not days, and keep your follow-up reviews so your dose can be adjusted safely."

How much weight can you lose with Wegovy?

Results vary from person to person and are never guaranteed. In the STEP 1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, adults with overweight or obesity taking semaglutide 2.4 mg alongside lifestyle changes lost, on average, around 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks, compared with about 2.4% for those on a placebo.5 This is an average across a trial, so your own result may be higher or lower and depends heavily on diet, activity and consistency.

Does Wegovy work without diet and exercise?

No. Wegovy is licensed and designed to be used as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. NHS England is clear that "you will need to eat a balanced, reduced calorie diet and take part in physical activity regularly whilst taking the medicine".6 The medicine makes healthier choices easier to stick to by reducing hunger, but the lifestyle changes are what make the results last.

What happens when you stop Wegovy?

Wegovy manages appetite only while you are taking it. When treatment stops, appetite tends to return, and some weight is often regained, especially without a maintenance plan. This is why it is viewed as a long-term treatment. We cover this in detail in what happens when you stop Wegovy.

Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic or Mounjaro?

Wegovy and Ozempic both contain semaglutide, but they are licensed for different purposes in the UK: Wegovy for weight management and Ozempic for type 2 diabetes.4 Mounjaro contains a different active ingredient, tirzepatide, which works on two gut hormones rather than one. For a full comparison, see Wegovy vs Ozempic and Wegovy vs Mounjaro.

Who is Wegovy suitable for?

Wegovy is licensed for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and activity.4 It is not suitable for everyone, and a clinician checks your suitability before it can be prescribed. Read more in who can take Wegovy, and see the common unwanted effects in Wegovy side effects.

On the NHS, NICE recommends Wegovy only through specialist weight management services, so eligibility is limited.7 Many people therefore access it privately. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, so it cannot be bought over the counter: it is supplied through Mail My Meds, a GPhC-registered UK pharmacy, after an online weight-management consultation and assessment by a UK-registered clinician.

Frequently asked questions

How does Wegovy work for weight loss?

Wegovy contains semaglutide, which mimics the GLP-1 hormone your gut releases after eating. It acts on the appetite centres in the brain to reduce hunger and cravings, and it slows stomach emptying so you feel fuller for longer. Eating less then leads to weight loss when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and activity.

Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?

Wegovy and Ozempic both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but they are licensed for different uses in the UK. Wegovy is licensed for weight management, while Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes. They are not interchangeable, and a prescriber decides which treatment is appropriate.

How long does Wegovy take to start working?

Many people notice reduced appetite within the first one to two weeks. Weight change is gradual because the dose is increased in steps, and the stronger appetite effect usually builds as you reach the higher doses over about four to five months. Results vary from person to person.

Does Wegovy work without diet and exercise?

No. Wegovy is licensed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. The medicine makes it easier to eat less by reducing hunger, but the lifestyle changes are what help the weight stay off over time.

Do you keep the weight off after stopping Wegovy?

Wegovy controls appetite only while you are taking it. After stopping, appetite tends to return, and some weight is often regained, particularly without a maintenance plan. This is why it is considered a long-term treatment and why ongoing lifestyle support matters.

Is Wegovy available on the NHS?

Wegovy is available on the NHS only through specialist weight management services, and eligibility is limited. Because access is restricted, many people choose to access Wegovy privately through a registered online pharmacy after an online consultation and clinician assessment.
