What Is the Wegovy Pill? Oral Semaglutide Explained

In one sentence

The Wegovy pill is a once-daily tablet form of semaglutide, the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed in the UK for weight loss, and it is available privately after an online consultation.

At a glance

  • The Wegovy pill contains oral semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, in tablet form.

  • The MHRA approved it on 11 June 2026 as the UK's first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight loss.

  • It is taken as one tablet a day on an empty stomach, and comes in 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg and 25mg strengths.

  • It is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition.

  • It is a prescription-only medicine, available privately after a consultation, and is not currently on the NHS.

  • It works by reducing appetite so you feel fuller and eat less, alongside a healthier diet and more activity.

For years, the most effective weight-loss medicines in the UK have meant a weekly injection. That has now changed. The Wegovy pill brings the same active ingredient, semaglutide, into a simple daily tablet, giving people a needle-free option for the first time.

This matters because excess weight is common. Around 30% of adults in England live with obesity, and a further 36% are overweight1. This guide explains exactly what the Wegovy pill is, how it works, who it is for and how to access it in the UK.

Key takeaways

Is the Wegovy pill the same as the injection? Yes. Both contain semaglutide. The main difference is that the pill is taken as a daily tablet, while the injection is given once a week.

Is it available in the UK yet? Yes. It has been available privately since the MHRA approved it on 11 June 2026, following an online consultation. It is not yet available on the NHS.

Who is the Wegovy pill for? Adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related health condition, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.

Do you need a prescription? Yes. It is a prescription-only medicine, so a clinician must assess whether it is suitable and safe for you before it can be supplied.

What is the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is a prescription tablet that contains oral semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk. It is the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed in the UK specifically for weight loss, approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on 11 June 20262.

In plain terms, it is the tablet version of a medicine many people already know as a weight-loss injection. It belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These work with your body's own appetite signals rather than acting as a stimulant or a "fat burner".

"The Wegovy pill gives people a needle-free way to take semaglutide, but it is exactly the same serious prescription medicine as the injection. It is a genuine clinical treatment, not a quick fix, and it works best when it supports changes to how you eat and move."

What is oral semaglutide?

Oral semaglutide is semaglutide in tablet form. Semaglutide is a molecule that mimics a natural gut hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which your body releases after eating to tell your brain you are full. Taking it daily helps to steady appetite and reduce hunger.

It is worth clearing up a common source of confusion. Oral semaglutide is also sold under the brand name Rybelsus, but Rybelsus is licensed to treat type 2 diabetes, not weight loss, and is used at lower doses. The Wegovy pill is the version licensed for weight management. You can read more about how the Wegovy pill differs from Rybelsus in our dedicated guide.

How does the Wegovy pill work?

The Wegovy pill works by copying the GLP-1 hormone. This tells your brain you are full, slows how quickly your stomach empties and reduces appetite, so you naturally eat less. The NHS describes this class of medicine as one that "makes you feel fuller for longer and therefore less hungry".3

Because it changes appetite rather than forcing rapid weight loss, the effect builds gradually as the dose increases. For a full explanation, see our guide to how the Wegovy pill works.

What is the Wegovy pill used for?

The Wegovy pill is licensed to help adults manage their weight when they also follow a reduced-calorie diet and increase physical activity. It is intended for people living with obesity or with excess weight that is affecting their health, not for cosmetic or short-term weight loss.

Its licensed use covers adults who have:

  • a BMI of 30 or above (obesity), or

  • a BMI of 27 to 30 (overweight) together with at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol.2

A prescriber checks these criteria before it can be supplied. Learn more about who can take the Wegovy pill.

What strengths does the Wegovy pill come in?

The Wegovy pill comes in four strengths: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg and 25mg. You do not start on the full dose. Instead, you begin low and step up gradually over several months, spending at least one month at each level. This "titration" helps your body adjust and reduces side effects such as nausea.

How is the Wegovy pill taken?

You take the Wegovy pill once a day, in the morning, on an empty stomach. Swallow it whole with a small sip of plain water (no more than half a glass), then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other tablets. Do not split, crush or chew it.

Getting this routine right matters, because food and other drinks reduce how well the tablet is absorbed. Our step-by-step guide explains how to take the Wegovy pill correctly.

How effective is the Wegovy pill?

Clinical trials show that oral semaglutide can lead to meaningful weight loss when combined with diet and activity. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking the 25mg tablet lost on average 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% for those taking a placebo4.

Results vary from person to person, and the medicine is not a substitute for healthy habits. For a realistic picture of the timeline and what affects your results, read what results to expect on the Wegovy pill.

Is the Wegovy pill available on the NHS?

No. The Wegovy pill is not currently available on the NHS for weight loss. On the NHS, GLP-1 weight-management medicines are only offered through specialist weight management services and under strict criteria set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)5.

For now, the tablet is available privately. We explain the full picture in our guide to whether the Wegovy pill is available on the NHS.

How do you get the Wegovy pill in the UK?

Because it is a prescription-only medicine, you cannot buy the Wegovy pill over the counter or without an assessment. In the UK, you access it privately through a registered pharmacy service. You complete an online consultation, a prescriber reviews your suitability, and if it is right for you, the pharmacy dispenses and delivers it.

"A proper clinical assessment is there to protect you. We check your BMI, your medical history and any other medicines you take before deciding whether the Wegovy pill is safe and suitable. If it is not the right option, we will tell you and talk through the alternatives."

Frequently asked questions about the Wegovy pill

Is the Wegovy pill the same as Ozempic?

No. Ozempic and the Wegovy pill both contain semaglutide, but Ozempic is an injection licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. The Wegovy pill is a tablet licensed specifically for weight management in the UK.

Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?

Both are oral semaglutide tablets, but they are licensed for different things. Rybelsus is licensed to treat type 2 diabetes at lower doses. The Wegovy pill is licensed for weight loss and goes up to a 25mg daily dose.

Can you buy the Wegovy pill over the counter?

No. The Wegovy pill is a prescription-only medicine. It cannot be bought over the counter or without a consultation. A prescriber must assess your suitability before it can be supplied.

Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?

Both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide. They are taken differently, a daily tablet versus a weekly injection, and your prescriber can help you decide which form suits you. Individual results always vary.

How long does the Wegovy pill take to work?

Appetite changes can begin within the first few weeks, but weight loss builds gradually as the dose increases over several months. The medicine is designed to be used long term alongside diet and activity, not as a short course.

Is the Wegovy pill safe?

For most suitable adults, it is considered safe when prescribed and monitored correctly, but like all medicines, it has possible side effects, most commonly nausea and other digestive symptoms. This is why a clinical assessment before you start is important.
